“Cast your burden on the LORD,
And He shall sustain you;
He shall never permit the righteous to be moved.”
A Prayer for Things You Cannot Control
There are some problems we can solve.
There are decisions we can make, conversations we can begin, apologies we can offer, and practical steps we can take.
But eventually, every one of us encounters something we cannot fix.
A relationship we cannot repair by ourselves.
Someone we love making choices we cannot change.
A diagnosis we cannot reverse.
A door we cannot force open.
An outcome we cannot guarantee.
A question we cannot answer.
In those moments, a prayer for things you cannot control becomes more than asking God to change a situation.
It becomes an act of surrender.
The Burden of Trying to Fix Everything
Caring deeply about something can make us feel responsible for its outcome.
If someone we love is struggling, we want to make things better.
If circumstances are uncertain, we want to find the solution.
If a problem continues, we may wonder whether we simply have not tried hard enough.
There is nothing wrong with taking responsible action.
But responsibility has limits.
We can offer wisdom without controlling another person’s choices.
We can prepare carefully without controlling what happens next.
We can pray faithfully without deciding how God must answer.
Recognizing those limits is not giving up.
It is recognizing where our responsibility ends and God’s care continues.
Cast Your Burden on the Lord
Psalm 55:22 gives us a direct invitation:
“Cast your burden on the LORD.”
The verse does not tell us to pretend the burden is small.
It acknowledges that we have burdens.
But it also tells us what to do with them.
Cast them on God.
That means we do not have to endlessly hold, examine, rehearse, and carry everything ourselves.
We can place what concerns us before the One whose strength is greater than ours.
And notice the promise that follows:
“He shall sustain you.”
Sometimes we pray for God to remove the burden.
Sometimes His grace sustains us while we walk through it.
Both require trust.
Surrender Is Not Indifference
Surrender can be misunderstood.
It does not mean we stop caring.
It does not mean we become passive.
It does not mean we refuse to act when God has given us something to do.
Surrender means we stop demanding control over what was never ours to control.
We do what love requires.
We do what wisdom allows.
We do what faith asks.
Then we entrust the outcome to God.
A prayer for things you cannot control allows us to say:
“Lord, I care deeply about this, but I know You care even more.”
When Prayer Does Not Immediately Change the Situation
Yesterday we reflected on prayer for everyday life and Paul’s instruction to bring everything to God.
That invitation becomes especially important when the answer does not come quickly.
We may pray faithfully and still have to wait.
The relationship may remain difficult.
The uncertainty may continue.
The person we are praying for may still struggle.
The door may remain closed.
But unanswered prayer does not mean unheard prayer.
God can be working in ways we cannot yet recognize.
And while we wait, He can work within us too.
He can replace panic with patience.
Fear with trust.
Exhaustion with strength.
And the need to control everything with a willingness to place the outcome in His hands.
Give God What You Cannot Carry
A prayer for things you cannot control can begin with simply admitting that you have reached the limit of what you can change. Perhaps there is something in your life today that you have been trying desperately to fix.
You have thought about it.
Talked about it.
Planned around it.
Lost sleep over it.
Prayed about it and then picked it back up again.
You may have reached the point where there is simply nothing more you can do right now.
That can feel frightening.
But it can also become a sacred invitation.
Place it in God’s hands.
You may need to surrender it again tomorrow.
Perhaps again this afternoon.
That is okay.
Surrender is sometimes a prayer we repeat many times.
Each time the worry returns, we can return it to God.
Let God Be God
There is freedom in remembering that we are not responsible for being God.
We cannot see every consequence.
We cannot know every future possibility.
We cannot change another person’s heart.
We cannot guarantee tomorrow.
But God sees what we cannot.
He knows what we do not.
He loves more completely than we ever could.
And He remains faithful even when circumstances remain unresolved.
Today, let your prayer be simple:
“Lord, show me what is mine to do, and help me trust You with everything else.”
That may be one of the most freeing prayers we ever learn to pray.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
You know the situation I have been carrying and how much I want to make it right. You know the questions I cannot answer and the outcomes I cannot control.
Give me wisdom to recognize what You are asking me to do and courage to do it faithfully.
Then help me release what belongs in Your hands.
When worry returns, remind me that I can bring this burden back to You. When I am tempted to control what I cannot change, teach me to trust Your wisdom, Your timing, and Your love.
Sustain me while I wait. Give me peace when answers do not come quickly. Help me believe that You are present and working even when I cannot see what You are doing.
Today I place what I cannot fix into Your hands.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

May He sustain you in the waiting, quiet the need to control every outcome, and remind you that nothing you surrender to Him leaves His loving care.
