Opening Scripture
“Behold, I will do a new thing,
Now it shall spring forth;
Shall you not know it?
I will even make a road in the wilderness
And rivers in the desert.”
Begin Again With God From Where You Are
There are times when we wish a fresh start meant going backward.
Back before the mistake.
Before the missed opportunity.
Before the relationship became complicated.
Before we made the decision we now question.
We imagine what we would do differently if we could return to that earlier moment with everything we know today.
But God rarely gives us a new beginning by returning us to yesterday.
He meets us here.
Isaiah 43:19 contains a powerful promise:
“I will do a new thing.”
God does not say, “I will recreate the old thing exactly as it was.”
He says new.
Sometimes the first step toward a fresh start is accepting that we cannot redo yesterday.
But we can begin again with God today.
You Do Not Need the Perfect Starting Point
We often delay beginning because our circumstances do not look ideal.
When I have more time.
When I feel more confident.
When the situation settles down.
When I understand everything.
When I have the right resources.
Then I will begin.
But perfect starting points are rare.
Most meaningful beginnings happen in the middle of real life.
Isaiah describes a road appearing in a wilderness and rivers flowing through a desert.
Those are not ideal environments.
They are places where a way forward seems unlikely.
Perhaps that is part of the promise.
God does not need ideal circumstances to create a path.
Start With What Is Still Possible
A fresh start becomes overwhelming when we think we have to repair everything immediately.
Usually we do not.
Maybe you cannot change the decision you made.
But you can make the next decision differently.
You cannot take back words already spoken.
But you can apologize for them.
You cannot recover every lost opportunity.
But you can become ready for the next one.
You cannot undo years of neglecting something important.
But you can give it attention today.
You cannot control how another person responds.
But you can control whether you approach them with honesty and grace.
The question is not:
“How do I fix my entire past?”
A better question is:
“What is still possible from here?”
There is almost always something.
Do Not Confuse a Different Future With a Lesser One
Sometimes what makes starting again difficult is that the future no longer looks the way we originally imagined.
The old plan may be gone.
A particular opportunity may have passed.
A relationship may have changed.
A dream may need to take a different form.
We can become so attached to the road we expected that we fail to recognize another road when God opens it.
Isaiah says God makes a road in the wilderness.
Not necessarily the road we had mapped.
A road.
There may be a good future ahead that looks different from the one you once pictured.
Different does not automatically mean worse.
Take the Next Faithful Step
We often want a complete map before moving.
God frequently gives us enough light for the next step.
Call the person.
Write the first page.
Schedule the appointment.
Clear the space.
Return to prayer.
Apply for the opportunity.
Ask for help.
Forgive.
Begin the conversation.
Spend twenty minutes doing the thing you have been postponing.
A small action may not feel like a fresh start.
But beginnings often look small while we are standing inside them.
Yesterday we reflected on the assurance that God is not finished with you.
That truth gives us courage today.
If God is still working, then where you are standing is not merely the place where something ended.
It can also become the place where something new begins.
Leave Room for God to Surprise You
We naturally want to know where a new beginning will lead.
Sometimes we cannot.
The road Isaiah describes appears where there was no road.
The river flows where water was not expected.
God’s new work may not resemble our old expectations.
That can be frightening.
It can also be hopeful.
You do not need to know the entire outcome before taking a faithful step.
You need enough trust to move with God today.
Perhaps the new thing has already begun in a way you have not recognized.
A changed attitude.
A new conversation.
A door closing.
A different priority.
A desire to try again.
A willingness to release something.
A small return of hope.
Do not dismiss the beginning because it does not yet look impressive.
Begin Here
You cannot begin yesterday.
You do not yet have tomorrow.
You have here.
You have today.
You have the lessons you learned.
The faith you possess.
The choices still available.
And the God who promises that wilderness is not beyond His ability to make a way.
You may wish you were beginning from somewhere else.
But God knows exactly where you are.
Bring Him the disappointment.
Bring Him the regret.
Bring Him the uncertainty.
Bring Him what remains.
Then ask Him to show you the next faithful step.
You do not need to reconstruct yesterday.
You can begin again with God from here.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You that I do not have to return to yesterday in order to begin again.
Help me release the things I cannot change and learn faithfully from what has happened.
Show me what is still possible from where I am.
When I become discouraged because the future looks different from what I expected, help me trust that different does not have to mean lesser.
Give me wisdom to recognize the next faithful step and courage to take it.
Make a way where I cannot yet see one, and help me remain open to the new things You may be doing.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
