Opening Scripture
“Your word is a lamp to my feet
And a light to my path.”
Faith Begins With the First Step
Faith begins with the first step when we choose to move forward even when we cannot see the entire path ahead.
One of the hardest parts of following God is accepting that He often reveals His direction one step at a time.
We want the complete plan.
We want to know where the road leads.
We want confirmation that every decision will work out exactly as we hope.
But God rarely gives us the entire picture at once.
Instead, He invites us to trust Him with the next step.
Psalm 119:105 reminds us:
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
Notice the difference between a lamp and a spotlight.
A spotlight reveals everything ahead.
A lamp reveals enough light for the next step.
God’s guidance often works the same way.
He may not show us every detail of the future, but He gives us enough direction to walk faithfully today.
Trusting God One Step at a Time
Throughout Scripture, we see examples of people who had to take the first step before they understood the entire journey.
Abraham stepped forward when God called him to leave his homeland.
He did not have a detailed map.
He did not know every challenge he would face.
He simply trusted the God who was leading him.
Peter stepped out of the boat when Jesus called him.
He could not control the waves.
He could not predict what would happen next.
But he knew who was calling him.
Faith is not built by waiting until everything feels safe.
Faith grows when we respond to God’s direction even when the next step requires courage.
Many times, we delay obedience because we want certainty first.
We say:
“God, show me the whole plan, and then I will move.”
But God often says:
“Trust Me with the step in front of you.”
When God Reveals Only the Next Step
There are seasons when we wonder why God has not shown us more.
Why has the answer not come?
Why has the path not become clearer?
Why does the next chapter still feel uncertain?
Sometimes God withholds the full picture because He is developing our trust.
If we knew every detail, we might depend on the plan more than the Planner.
If we saw every obstacle ahead, we might become discouraged before we ever began.
But when God gives us only the next step, He invites us into a deeper relationship with Him.
He teaches us to listen.
He teaches us patience.
He teaches us that His presence is more important than our ability to predict the future.
Faith begins with the first step because every step taken with God brings us closer to understanding His purpose.
Taking Your Next Faithful Step
Perhaps today you are standing before a decision.
Maybe God is calling you toward something new.
Maybe you are waiting for direction.
Maybe you know the next step you need to take, but fear has been holding you back.
Remember this:
You do not need to know everything before you obey God.
You do not need to see the entire road before you begin walking.
You only need to trust the One who holds the future.
The first step may feel small.
It may feel uncertain.
It may even feel uncomfortable.
But a faithful step taken with God is never wasted.
The same God who guides your first step will guide the steps that follow.
Walk forward today knowing that God is not asking you to figure out the entire journey.
He is asking you to walk with Him.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for guiding me even when I cannot see the entire path ahead. Help me trust Your wisdom and follow Your direction one step at a time. Give me courage when I feel uncertain and remind me that Your presence is greater than my fears. Teach me to listen for Your guidance and faithfully follow wherever You lead. In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
