“And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.”
Work Heartily for the Lord
Some work feels meaningful while we are doing it.
Other work simply needs to get done.
The report.
The laundry.
The dishes.
The appointment.
The grocery shopping.
The email that needs an answer.
The lawn that needs mowing.
The paperwork nobody particularly wants to complete.
Much of life is built from tasks that will never receive applause.
Yet Colossians gives ordinary work an unexpected dignity:
“Whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord.”
Whatever you do.
That reaches far beyond the work we consider important.
To work heartily for the Lord means even familiar responsibilities can become places where faith is practiced.
Not Every Calling Comes With a Title
We sometimes associate purpose with important positions.
Pastor.
Teacher.
Leader.
Missionary.
Business owner.
Doctor.
Parent.
But purpose is not limited to titles.
There are people doing deeply valuable work that almost nobody notices.
Someone prepares a meal for a family.
Someone patiently helps an aging parent.
Someone cleans a building after everyone else leaves.
Someone answers another customer’s question with kindness.
Someone stays late to finish something properly.
Someone keeps a promise when cutting a corner would have been easier.
Someone does the same necessary task for the thousandth time.
God sees faithfulness that other people overlook.
The importance of the work is not determined entirely by how impressive it appears.
Ordinary Work Reveals Something About Us
Routine responsibilities can reveal our character precisely because they are routine.
It is easier to give our best when something feels exciting.
The harder test comes when nobody is watching and the task feels insignificant.
Will we still be honest?
Patient?
Careful?
Dependable?
Kind?
Will we do something properly even when doing it poorly would probably go unnoticed?
Colossians shifts the audience.
We are not working merely for the person who may evaluate us.
We are not serving only when someone appreciates us.
Our faithfulness ultimately belongs to God.
That does not mean perfection.
It means remembering Who is present in the ordinary work.
Your Work Does Not Have to Be Your Identity
There is another side to this Scripture that matters.
Taking work seriously does not mean allowing work to become everything.
Our worth does not rise with a promotion or disappear with retirement.
A job title does not determine our value before God.
Some seasons involve productive work.
Others involve caregiving, recovery, unemployment, retirement, or responsibilities that cannot be summarized neatly on a résumé.
The invitation remains:
Whatever you do.
Faithfulness can take different forms in different seasons.
You may not be doing what you once did.
You may not yet be doing what you hope to do.
You can still honor God with what is yours to do today.
The Small Task Can Become an Offering
Imagine approaching one ordinary responsibility differently today.
Instead of:
“I have to do this again.”
Perhaps:
“I can do this faithfully.”
That small shift does not magically make unpleasant work enjoyable.
But it changes the meaning we bring to it.
The meal becomes an act of care.
The careful answer becomes an act of integrity.
The cleaned room becomes an act of service.
The patient conversation becomes an act of love.
The completed responsibility becomes an act of stewardship.
On Sunday, we reflected on how God is present in the ordinary day, not only in extraordinary spiritual moments.
That means He is present in the work too.
The ordinary task can become an offering when it is carried out with faithfulness.
Faithfulness Is Enough for Today
You may have responsibilities today that feel far removed from anything spiritual.
Do them well.
You may have work nobody appreciates.
Remain faithful.
You may be tired of repeating the same tasks.
Ask God for renewed patience.
You may be in a season where your work looks smaller than it once did.
Do not assume that makes your contribution meaningless.
God does not measure usefulness by visibility.
He sees the integrity nobody congratulates.
The kindness nobody records.
The service nobody posts about.
The work nobody remembers to thank you for.
So bring God into what is already on today’s list.
Not just the important things.
Whatever you do.
Work faithfully.
Serve generously.
Act with integrity.
And remember who ultimately receives the offering.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the work and responsibilities You have placed before me.
Help me honor You not only in the things that feel important, but also in the ordinary tasks I repeat day after day.
Give me patience when the work is tedious, integrity when nobody is watching, and kindness toward the people I encounter along the way.
Keep me from measuring my value by my title, productivity, recognition, or accomplishments.
Teach me to work heartily for the Lord, remembering that even unnoticed faithfulness matters to You.
May the work of my hands and the attitude of my heart honor You today.
